Safeguarding Training Empowers Zambian Youth Organisations

From 16 to 18 July 2025, 20 youth leaders from 10 organisations participated in a three-day Safeguarding Training in Lusaka, Zambia, organised by Restless Development under the AU–EU Youth Voices Lab – Power of the Collective. The training focused on building stronger safeguarding systems, survivor-centred response mechanisms, mental health awareness, and digital safety in advocacy.

Participants explored safeguarding principles, SHEA (Sexual Harassment, Exploitation and Abuse), power dynamics, and ethical handling of disclosures. They also developed action plans, Codes of Conduct, and reporting flows to embed safeguarding policies in their organisations.

Interactive sessions combined formal learning with group work, simulations, and daily reflections. A peer-support WhatsApp group was created to sustain learning, exchange best practices, and ensure accountability beyond the training.

The training strengthened institutional safeguarding across youth-led organisations, equipping participants with practical skills and promoting safer, more accountable youth engagement. As one participant reflected: “I’ve learned so much about safeguarding and digital safety… I now feel more confident knowing what to do and what not to do when advocating for menstrual health and other important issues.”
