Celebrating Youth Leadership: Mabile M. Jöthdít Becomes South Sudan’s First Rhodes Scholar

We proudly celebrate the exceptional achievement of Mabile M. Jöthdít, our Youth Advisory Board member from South Sudan who has become the country’s first Rhodes Scholar. Mabile’s journey is a powerful narrative of perseverance shaped entirely within South Sudan. A Constitutional Scholar and governance practitioner, he earned a First-Class Honours Degree in Law from the University of Juba, studying in an environment where academic resources are limited and legal systems are often challenged by political realities. Reflecting on this experience, Mabile describes his education as an “intellectual insurgency,” where scarcity became the driving force behind discipline, critical thinking, and purpose.

Competing against candidates from globally renowned institutions, Mabile relied on his strength as a national debate champion and seasoned mooter, proving that intellectual excellence can transcend structural disadvantage. His admission to the University of Oxford’s Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL) is not only a personal achievement but also a symbolic breakthrough for South Sudanese youth. It challenges the notion that global academic success requires international privilege, demonstrating instead that world-class intellect can be cultivated locally.

For Mabile, this milestone represents more than individual success—it is the breaking of a psychological barrier for young people in his community. He emphasizes that global institutions like Oxford should not be seen as an escape, but as platforms to acquire the tools needed to rebuild and transform societies at home.

His experience as a member of our programme’s Youth Advisory Board has further shaped his vision. Through engagement in the AU-EU Youth Voices Lab, he gained insight into the intersection between policy, governance, and youth participation across continents. This exposure reinforced his belief that young people must move beyond being passive beneficiaries and become active architects of systemic change.

Mabile’s message to youth is clear: ambition must not be limited by context. Instead, challenges should be used as analytical tools to understand and transform systems. He underscores that meaningful change requires not only passion but also rigorous scholarship, discipline, and the courage to confront injustice with knowledge and competence. His story stands as a compelling example of youth leadership in action, demonstrating how resilience, education, and purpose can redefine possibilities and inspire a new generation of changemakers.
