Empowering Youth Voices in Digital Governance: Insights from Douala Forum
11 March 2026, Douala, Cameroon
On 11 March 2026, the AU-EU Youth Voices Lab programme supported a dynamic forum in Douala, Cameroon, focused on youth participation in local governance in the digital era. Organised by ComDev Africa, the event convened 200 participants, including civil society leaders, youth leaders, students, local authorities, and youth mentors.
Titled “Local Governance in Douala in the Digital Era: What Role Do Young Girls and Boys Play in Decision-Making?”, the forum created an inclusive platform to explore how young people can actively contribute to governance processes shaped by digital transformation. A key highlight of the event was the delivery of module presentations by young participants themselves, demonstrating not only their knowledge but also their capacity to lead meaningful dialogue.
Discussions centred on strengthening youth engagement in decision-making, particularly in a rapidly evolving digital landscape. Participants examined both the opportunities and challenges young people face in influencing local governance, with a strong emphasis on digital inclusion and access.
The forum also aimed to build the capacities of attendees by enhancing their understanding of civic participation and equipping them with tools to engage more effectively in governance processes. As a result, a set of recommendations was developed to further support youth inclusion in local decision-making structures.
A powerful message emerged from the discussions: “Young people must be at the heart of digital governance for a sustainable future.” This statement reflects the broader vision of the AU-EU Youth Voices Lab programme—to empower young people as active citizens and key contributors to democratic and inclusive societies.
By fostering dialogue, knowledge-sharing, and collaboration, this initiative in Douala marks another important step toward ensuring that youth voices are not only heard but actively shape the future of governance in Africa and beyond.
