The next day of the “Lead the Narrative”: Visiting the Kakuma refugee camp
Following its recent “Lead the Narrative” youth advocacy training in Turkana, Youthmakers Hub visited the Kakuma refugee camp on 22 May 2025 to connect with youth-led and community-based organizations founded by participants of the programme. This visit was a direct outcome of the strong connections and trust built during the training. During this visit, the Youthmakers Hub met with youth-led and community-based organizations established and run by young people who had attended the training.
During the visit, the team met six inspiring organizations working at the grassroots level to empower their communities:
- Girl Power Action Initiative: Promoting girls’ education, menstrual health, and financial independence through sewing classes.
- Binadamu Tech: Supporting entrepreneurship by teaching handmade football production.
- FabLab – University of Geneva (InZone): Offering access to learning tools, 3D printing, and robotics education.
- Scorpion Control Center: Raising awareness on protection from venomous animals through community engagement.
- Season of the Time Media Production (STMP): Equipping youth with digital media and filmmaking skills.
- Inspire the Hands Creation Initiative (IHCI): Supporting young single mothers through jewelry making and sexual health education.
The visit also introduced participants to opportunities under the AU-EU Youth Lab programme, including its two initiatives: the AU-EU Youth Voices Lab and the AU-EU Youth Action Lab. These initiatives offer opportunities such as microgrant funding through the Youth Voices Third-Party Mechanism, or the types of grants of the Youth Action Lab and free online learning and networking via the Youth Voices Lab App. Young people at the Kakuma refugee camp and the Youthmakers Hub team established meaningful connections and insights, and pledged to a long-lasting partnership to support young people in developing their potential.
